When serious crime cases break out, media outlets are desperate to release the details of the crime. This might be due to their willingness to publish accounts of heinous crimes quickly when public interest is high. Since many people pay attention to crime, they are eager to find sources that are detailed or that differentiate them from other media outlets. This is the reason why some media report step-by-step details of crime, and I believe it is highly unethical. First, there is a fear of copycat crime. If detailed information is released, it is easy for prospective criminals to replicate. For example, there were two different cases emulating the notorious Hwasung case. Alongside this, the dignity and privacy of victims should be protected at all costs. Detailed coverage inevitably releases the information of victims or instigates them to recall traumatic experiences. Accordingly, people who share harmful information about crime should be punished regardless of the authenticity.
