There is an increasing tendency for people to downplay racism through denial or dismissing experiences as oversensitivity. For example, there are some teenagers in Korea showing little empathy or understanding of diverse religious or ethnic groups and regarding the different norms as erroneous. Finally, downplaying racism causes victims to psychological harm and isolation. Telling victims to “just ignore it” invalidates their lived experiences, which forces individuals to silently bear traumatic experiences, leading to increased rates of depression.
