Alongside this, the rise of social media accelerated this gap. Modern platforms create the illusion of large networks, interpreted as a means to gain recognition among peers. This is because social media interactions are represented numerically as followers. Social media stoked the desire to be recognized, and this can only be achieved through a larger network.
